Booklists

"Once you learn to read, you will be forever free"
Frederick Douglass

"As you read a book word by word and page by page, you participate in its creation, just as a cellist playing a Bach suite participates, note by note, in the creation, the comping-to-be, the existence, of the music. And, as you read and re-read, the book of course participates in the creation of you, your thoughts and feelings, the size and temper of your soul."

Ursula K. Le Guin

Books can open the world to anyone. The right books can help us think well, help us expand our knowledge, hone our character, and shape our worldview.
All families need a quality booklist to work from and draw inspiration from. We provide other places to find great book ideas in the Resources section, but this list provides our favorites for a well-rounded literary education. Read them to savor, read them aloud, read them over and over again over the years.

Don't let yourself think picture books are only for young children or chapter books are only for older. All the picture books listed in our booklists are wonderful for all ages, with excellent writing and beautiful illustrations. While some chapter books do include more mature information, many are suitable for reading aloud to all ages.

We recommend parents pre-read all books to determine if they are suitable for your child and family. While we choose only books we have read and assess as quality literature, some may contain subjects that require discernment or a worldview discussion with your child. A book's inclusion on any KMA booklist does not mean we endorse all the ideas or activities depicted in the book, or the ideas or opinions of the book's author.
