Recommended Resources

The beautiful thing about homeschooling is the many, many resources that now exist to help your family and child along your educational journey. The following resources are ones we have used extensively over the years and encourage parents to explore.

However, a recommendation here does not mean KMA endorses every idea, opinion, worldview, or offering from these resources. It is up to parents to discern what is right for your child and family.

We highly recommend reading out loud to or listening to audiobooks with your children, no matter how old they are (there is a reason audiobooks are so popular!)

Some of these resources do include curriculum, but you can also use them as places to get wonderful book ideas or to source books without necessarily using the curriculum.

A Charlotte Mason-based free curriculum with booklists for each age level.
Focuses on classic literature.

Unit studies by age level.
Focuses on history, geography, science, music, and art.

A fantastic guide by William Kilpatrick et al. that will help your family explore classic novels, contemporary fiction, myths, legends, science fiction, etc. in light of the way a story can illustrate ethics, moral dilemmas, and right vs. wrong clearly and eloquently.

A Charlotte Mason-inspired secular curriculum with booklists for each age level.

Focuses on modern secular literature

Give Your Child the World by Jaime C. Martin is an excellent guide to stories from around the world. Literature is divided by age level, global region, and historical timeframe.

An excellent resource for finding your next great read, both for your children and for yourself.

If you are looking for ideas for older children, please pre-read the books as some are not necessarily appropriate for every family.

We also recommend the companion book The Read-Aloud Family: Making Meaningful and Lasting Connections with Your Kids by Sarah Mackenzie.
